1970
Ira Gilford modified the Custom Mustang to design the Boss Hoss Silver Special that was only available by joining the HotWheels Club and sending in a mail-in form. Three chrome cars were available with black stripes, blue "glass", louvered back window and a racing number sticker on the door. Interiors were either black or white and there was no hood, displaying a large engine. Redline tires.
My first Boss Hoss Silver Special is in good shape with straight wheels, visible stripes, and racing number stickers. The #6 is clearly visible on one side and the other side (shown) barely visible. Black interior.

The stripes on my second Boss Hoss Silver Special are barely visible or missing, but the number "3" is in great shape!

1971
Ira Gilford's design for the Boss Hoss Silver Special was re-used for the Boss Hoss in The Spoilers series in 1971. Variations include left over chrome cars that were painted over (making them extra shiny) and black painted roofs. Racing numbers from 1-9 were on a small white round sticker on the door. Interiors were either white, dark brown, or silver. It came with a metal collector's button and sponsor decal sheet. 10 colors without the black roof (Blue, Aqua, Green, Olive, Orange, Brown, Red, Rose, Pink, Purple), 6 colors with the black roof (Aqua, Green, Olive, Brown, Red, Purple), and 3 colors that were obviously painted over left over chrome club kit cars (Aqua, Blue, Red). No hood, displaying a large engine. Redline tires.
An original 1971 Boss Hoss in The Spoilers series.

Spectraflame Orange with the number "5" on the side, stripes on the roof and silver interior. I love it!
|
Olive with a black roof and silver interior. The number "4" sticker is in good shape but the black stripe below the number is barely attached and peeling badly.

1975
Mustang Stocker
- Flying Colors series. Ira Gilford and Larry Wood collaborated on the design. The car was available in three (3) color patterns: yellow with orange and magenta stripes, yellow with red and blue stripes, or white with red and blue stripes. Blue glass, louvered back window, black interior. Redline tires.
My first Mustang Stocker was found years ago painted blue over the original yellow. It became my first and only restoration, stripping the paint, painting it enamel yellow, installing new wheels, axles, decals, and "glass". Because the car was painted blue by someone else it was the perfect car to try this on. I couldn't make it worse.

The metal body and black plastic interior are the only original parts of this car left. It's hard to believe it was the blue-over-yellow car in the photo to the left! It also replicates the third of three paint schemes for this car.
|
My second Mustang Stocker gave me a glimpse of what my first one (painted blue) might have looked like. this one is enamel yellow with red and blue stripes. And who wouldn't want a Mustang with 450 hp?
|
My third Mustang Stocker is in beautiful shape - but the axles seem long and loose and the paint very new looking; evidence that it has been "restored". I have mixed feelings. Still a 1975 Mustang Stocker but likely not in its actual aged condition, which I prefer.

Mustang Stocker
- Super Chromes series. Orange and magenta stripes. "Ford" on roof and "450 HP" on sides. Black interior, blue glass, louvered back window, unpainted Hong Kong base. Redline tires.

Show Hoss II
- Flying Colors series car #30. Yellow with dark red, white and black on top with "Show Hoss II", horse, and racing deco on hood. Unpainted Hong Kong base. Can be found with BW or RL tires. The car is hinged near the rear so the entire body can open. "Hoss" is slang for horse, or Mustang. Available with and without redline tires. Wonder why it is called the Show Hoss II when there wasn't a real Ford Mustang Show Hoss II? It is based on the Mustang II which was produced by Ford between 1974-78.
